Florida Coral Castle - Ed Liedskalnins - Korallu Pils - The Latvian Connection

Coral Castle, located on South Dixie Highway in Homestead, Florida, is a strange and unexplainable mystery. The castle contains 1,100 tons of carved rock. The big question is how did one single man, who only stood five feet tall and weighed 100 pounds, move and carve all this using only hand tools?

Edward Leedskalnin was born in Eastern, Latvia in 1887. At the age of 26, he was suppose to marry Agnes Scuffs, but she called off the wedding the day before the ceremony. Broken-hearted Edward left Latvia, eventually moving to Florida and starting his monument to his lost love.

For 28 years, until the time of his death, Edward worked on the castle. It opened in 1923. Until 1951, when he died, Edward greeted visitors personally, asking only for a donation of 10 cents. The mystery of how he created the Coral Castle by himself remains to this day.
